The Jharkhand Cabinet on Friday approved the procurement of 2,388 vehicles for the state police at a total estimated cost of Rs 146.79 crore. The decision was taken in the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
According to the Home, Jail, and Disaster Management Department, 1,255 four-wheelers and 1,133 two-wheelers will be purchased for use across police stations. Officials said that the lack of adequate and functional vehicles has affected mobility and enforcement capacity, particularly in rural and remote regions.

All vehicles will carry the official Jharkhand Police insignia and will be procured in two phases through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM). If the required models are not available on GeM, procurement will follow provisions outlined in the state’s procurement manual.
The sanctioned amount will be drawn from the 2025–26 state budget under the police administration head. The department has not yet released a district-wise breakdown of vehicle allocation.
Senior officials said that the new vehicles would assist in improving patrol coverage, response time, and law enforcement efficiency.
Past procurement exercises in the state have faced delays, especially when conducted outside GeM. Concerns have been raised over transparency and accountability in cases where the manual route is used.
Officials said a deployment plan is under preparation. The government has not indicated whether LWE-affected or transport-deficient police stations will receive priority.
The Cabinet decision marks one of the largest single-year vehicle procurements for the state police in recent years.
